INTRA-ISLAMIC CONFLICTS: Sunni & Shi’a
Many are asking me about the “dangerous contests between Sunni and Shi’a reaching our shores. There is NO ready answer to this question since the main PROTAGONISTS in this dangerous confrontation are Saudi Arabia (Sunni) and Iran (Shi’a).
Senior religious and political authorities in both the Sunni and Shi’a branches of Islam have to recognise that the various proxy conflicts between them – in Syria, Iraq, Yemen in SEA and in the Philippines are immensely costly in human suffering.
Sunni and Shi’a communities have to rediscover how to live together in peace, as they did for centuries. Sunni) and Shi’a have to build on what they have in common rather than what divides them, and stop promoting rival versions of Islamic extremism that threatens humanity and cooperation between and among civilizations.
