April 11 - Martyrdom of Fr. Tullio Favali, PIME

Fr. Tullio Favali, PIME – Martyr
April 11, 1985

The murder of Fr. Tullio was carried out in full view of the public, in the gruesome style of a public execution on April 11, 1985.

The narrative of Fr. Peter Geremia, PIME, his companion described the murder as an insane show that began around noon time of April 11th, 1985, right by the Highway at Crossing Km. 125 not far from military checkpoints. Local authorities and military men and many shocked citizens, witnessed the incredible scene. The group of killers proclaimed themselves as champions of the Armed Forces of the Philippines acting under government authority, while drinking and acting like an insane criminal gang out of control.

The gang of murderers were abusive beyond all limits of the imagination. They threatened the lives of a whole community. They shot at bystanders. They took Fr. Tullio’s motorcycle and burned it right in the middle of the highway. They made fun of the innocent priest who could not believe what they were doing. They shot him and scattered around his brains, then stepped on the body and kicked it.
Many people have told Fr. Peter, “Father, they are savages, that’s a disgrace to the entire Filipino nation.” Definitely, “they are not normal, they don’t represent the Filipino people. Whoever gave them the weapons and the authority to behave and kill in that way must be more guilty than they are”.

On April 11th, 2016, we remember that 31 years ago, evil paramilitary men under the authority and command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines murdered Fr. Tullio Favali, PIME in the most brutal way people can imagine. As we celebrate his martyrdom, we pledge our commitment to life and that never again shall we allow or tolerate evil men murder any fellow human being for whatever reason!
